Diego Sanchez Next In Line For UFC Lightweight Title
With his win over Clay Guida at the The Ultimate Fighter 9 finale, Diego Sanchez (21-2) says he’s next in line for the UFC lightweight title following the UFC 101 bout between BJ Penn and Kenny Florian.
“This comes from Lorenzo [Fertitta] and Dana [White]. They’re flying me out to Philadelphia. I’ll be sitting there ringside. I’ll probably be in the ring afterward. It’s on.”
“I know Kenny Florian,” he said. “I know how to beat him, and I’ll beat him again the way I beat him before. I’m going to be patient. I’m going to wait. I know he’s a counter-striker. I know he’s going to run around the ring. He was the same fighter then, too. If you watch my fight, he tried to run around the ring and he didn’t want to engage. o I put my hands down and chin up and said, ‘Come on, let’s fight.’ Eventually, I rushed him, took him down, and it’s going to be more of the same thing. He can work his wrestling all he wants, but I’m going to work mine more. He can work his ground skills all he wants, but I’m going to work mine more.”
“I feel I’m the biggest, strongest competitor at this weight,” he said. “The same way Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch use their size and strength advantage in the ring at 170, that’s what I’m going to do at 155. I’ve had two fights at this weight and I’m only getting better at the weight cut, getting better at this process and it’s only a matter of time until I master it.”
Sanchez updated Fanhouse about the title fight during this weekends UFC 100 events.
