DREAM.12 Quick Results – Overeem Victorious Again
Late Sunday evening, 2a.m. (EST)/11p.m. (PST), DREAM promotions unveiled their White Cage for the DREAM.12 event at Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan.
The main event saw Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem, who was the heavy favorite to win, square off against James Thompson who some odds makers marked as an 18-1 underdog.
Overeem quickly finished Thompson, a former Cage Rage and EliteXC fighter, in the first round by sinking in a standing guillotine choke in the first half minute of the fight. The Dutch fighter won his last bout a week ago by the same way, submitting Tony Sylvester in the first round of the Golden Glory’s ‘Ultimate Glory 11′ event.
Overeem is expected to compete a few more times in Japan, including the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 kick boxing finals in December.
Also scoring a victory at the DREAM event was Bellator Fighting Championships lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, who made his first appearance since winning the title. He faced DEEP lightweight champion Katsunori Kikuno who frustrated Alvarez in the first round by avoiding his take downs and almost ended the fight for the Bellator fighter with an early neck crank.
Alvarez took control in the second by knocking Kikuno down with a big right, then almost ended the fight with a guillotine choke, but in the end submitted the DEEP champ with an arm-triangle after a successful takedown.
