UPDATE: Renzo Gracie To Face Matt Hughes At UFC 109 A Possibility Denies February Fight

renzo-gracie.jpg A report from Heavy.com has welterweight fighters Renzo Gracie (13-6-1(1)) and Matt Hughes (43-7) facing each other as part of UFC 109 in February.

Rumors have circulated over the last month that the legendary Gracie family member has been in negotiations with the UFC. Both fighters have been approached about the fight, but bout agreements have not been signed.

If the rumor proves to be true, Renzo will fight on a card that includes another Gracie, Rolles who is set to face heavyweight Mostapha Al Turk.

Gracie hasn’t fought in over two years since his February 2007 disqualification victory (Knees to the head of a downed opponent) over Frank Shamrock at the EliteXC: Destiny event. The 42 year old won three straight but he lost three bouts before that. This bout will mark his first bout in the UFC.

Hughes who recently signed a multi fight deal with the UFC, has turned down matches against Josh Koscheck and Mike Swick because he desires more “interesting” fights. He defeated Matt Serra at UFC 98 via unanimous decision in his last fight but has lost three of his past five bouts.

**UPDATE**:

Renzo talked with Graciemag.com and denied the February bout but did admit that something would happen with the UFC.

No, Renzo is not going to fight in February, when he will be completely focused on cousin Rolles’s UFC debut. But…

“My relationship with the UFC is excellent. Something will happen…” he hints.

On his adversary, should it really be Matt Hughes, as has been speculated for weeks, Renzo confirms nothing. Nor does he deny it: “The match-up has been made. It’s going down. And as Nietzchian as it gets: better sooner than later. And I have a message for those who want me to stay home…”

The current rumored UFC 109 card appears as follows:

- Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller*
- Matt Hughes vs. TBA*
- Matt Serra vs. TBA*
- Rob Emerson vs. Phillipe Nover*
- Rolles Gracie vs. Mostapha Al Turk*
- Melvin Guillard vs. Ronnys Torres*

* – Not officially announced
