GSP Would Like To Compete For An Olympic Medal
The UFC’s welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre told reporters on Friday in Manchester that he would love a chance to compete for a spot on the Canadian Olympic wrestling team for the 2012 games.
“It’s something in my mind but the thing is I’m on contract with the UFC,” the Montreal mixed martial arts star spoke Friday prior at the UFC 105 weigh-in. “So I have to be very careful in what I’m saying, but we’ll see.”
“There is a big difference between saying I want to go to the Olympic Games and actually going to the Olympic Games,” he added. “It’s very hard. To do the tryouts and everything it’s very hard. You have to pass through a bunch of obstacles before you get there.”
St. Pierre is considered one of the best wrestlers in MMA even though he lacked the collegiate background. The Canadian admitted that as a mixed martial artist, he still enjoys the singular aspects of the sport such as wrestling.
“I’m a mixed martial artist,” stated St. Pierre. “I like to compete not only in the sport of MMA, but I like the single sports [themselves]. I love wrestling, I love boxing … for me, I love every single [discipline] of the sport. That is why I consider myself a mixed martial artist.”
Even UFC president Dana White showed some support for GSP’s aspirations when asked at the UFC 105 weigh-ins.
“I think it would be great if he won a medal. Just because you’re under contract with me doesn’t mean I don’t want you doing anything else in your life.”
GSP has won six straight matches including three straight title defenses, as well as winning the interim and undisputed welterweight title. The French Canadian last appeared at UFC 100 against Thiago Alves, where he handled the Brazilian easily throughout the five rounds. St. Pierre suffered a pulled groin muscle in the fourth round of the bout and has been on the mend since then.
His next opponent will be the winner between Dan Hardy and Mike Swick at this weekends UFC 105 event in Manchester, England.
