Gilbert Melendez And Josh Thomson To Meet At “Strikeforce: Evolution” Event
The Strikeforce organization will look to unify it’s lightweight belt between champion Josh Thomson (16-2 (1)) and interim champ Gilbert Melendez (16-2) on Dec. 19 in San Jose, Cali. as part of it’s “Strikeforce: Evolution” card.
The news came out of Melendez’s Cesar Gracie camp website (GracieFighter.com) on Monday.
Gilbert Melendez will be fighting Josh Thomson in Strikeforce’s December 19th show at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. The anticipated rematch had been canceled twice previously with Thomson citing injury for withdrawing on both occasions.
Melendez is on a two fight win streak, winning three of his past four fights. He’s defeated Mitsuhiro Ishida and Rodrigo Damm via knock out in his past two matches. He earned the interim title from Damm in April of this year at the Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz show.
Thomson has won seven bouts in a row defeating Ashe Bowman in his last fight on Sept. 20 at the Strikeforce: At The Mansion II show in Beverly Hills, Cali. Thomson earned the lightweight title after he defeated Melendez in June of 2008.
