Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin In The Works? Interim Title Could Be On The Line
UFC heavyweights Frank Mir (13-4) and Shane Carwin (11-0) have both said they’d be willing to face each other in the octagon in the absence of current heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar.
With Lesnar out of the picture due to a serious illness, his next challenger Carwin has been left out in the wind waiting for word on the champ and a possible title fight. Meanwhile, former UFC heavyweight champ Mir has thought of nothing but stepping back into the octagon to face Lesnar for a third time.
Since Mir’s victory over Cheick Kongo this weekend at UFC 107, both men have come out voicing their approval of a fight between the two.
This has the makings of a UFC interim heavyweight title match.
“I couldn’t argue against that,” said Mir speaking to MMAWeekly.com. “Carwin is a phenomenal match-up, and I think if I can’t fight Brock again to show that I’ve made improvements against that style, I think Shane Carwin is a more than an ample substitution. If anything, I think he’s a better version.”
Carwin wrote a big resounding YES from his official website shane-carwin.com when talking about a possible matchup with Mir. Noting that the former UFC champs victory on Saturday night moved him into the upper echelons of the heavyweight division.
A win like Frank had last night surely propels him to share the top of the division…The main question I am getting is would I fight Frank? The answer is easy YES. I am not a fighter who decides who he fights, I fight who I am told to fight. I like it that way, I am not trying to build a legacy I am trying to fight the best fighters in the World and determine where I fit in. Mir is a Multiple time Champion, who has been counted out more then Mike Tyson to only find himself right back at the top. He is a LEGEND of the sport and I would be honored to fight him.
With UFC president Dana White known for booking fights the fans want to see, a bout between Mir and Carwin is an almost sure bet. The only question that remains is whether both men will be fighting for an interim title or not.
