Jon Fitch Feels He Should Get Next Shot At GSP

Fitch-vs-AlvesAccording to UFC welterweight Jon Fitch (21-3(1)), if he defeats Thiago Alves (16-6) for a second time when they meet at UFC 111, then he should get the next shot at welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre.

Fitch was a guest on this past weeks HDNet episode of “Inside MMA” where he felt a victory at UFC 111 should make him the undisputed No.2 welterweight in the UFC. Both Fitch And Alves met at UFN 5 where he defeated the Brazilian in the second round via KO.

“If I stop him, I don’t see how they could deny me a shot at GSP. At that point I would have stopped someone twice that GSP couldn’t finish in five rounds, so I think that’s a very strong argument for me to get a title shot.”

“Mentally he’s matured a great deal in that time period,” Fitch said. “He was pretty young when we fought. … His wrestling defense is much better and he’s harder to take down. He’s stronger and I think he’s matured physically. Maybe he’s a little bit slower. We’ll see. … I’m a much better athlete than I was a couple years ago. I’m a much improved fighter from when I first fought, and so is he.”

UFC 111 will take place on March 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ and will be headlined by a welterweight title bout between champion GSP vs. top challenger Dan Hardy.
