There are few MMA fighters that have fans as vocal as Houston Alexander’s and despite recent setbacks in the fight game, Alexander is ready to take his spot amongst the elite UFC light heavyweights. He next fights on September 17th at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska as part of the UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs. Neer and The MMA News recently had a chance to speak with him. Here’s what the highly entertaining fighter had to say:
The MMA News: How’s everything going with the training?
Houston Alexander: We’re doing good, its really rough. I’m constantly learning, but I’m always staying intent.
The MMA News: How far out did you start your camp for your upcoming fight against Eric Shafer?
Houston Alexander: Man, I train everyday. It don’t matter, I’m always training.
The MMA News: What did you think of the Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin Fight?
Houston Alexander: It was interesting…karma comes around. Honestly what I thought of it was that Karma’s a bitch with a red dress. There’s not too much you can say.
The MMA News: Pertaining to that, are you at all concerned when you enter the Octagon who your referee is going to be?
Houston Alexander: We know who the ref is, but you know you should never let the ref dictate the situation. I will never get caught in that situation, and there’s no point in complaining about it. You get over the mistake and keep it moving.
The MMA News: What have you been doing outside of MMA?
Houston Alexander: I’ve been doing a lot of speaking engagements, like a motivational speaker. I’m still with the radio station also. The UFC has helped me help others, it’s been a blessing man.
The MMA News: How many fights do you have left on your contract?
Houston Alexander: I have this fight and I’ve already renewed the contract for 4 more after this one.
The MMA News: Do your kids understand MMA?
Houston Alexander: They understand MMA, but actually they’re more into the WWE.
The MMA News: Would you like to thank your sponsors?
Houston Alexander: InfoUSA, 8-Ball Nutrition, those guys are really huge. I also have to thank my coaches, Mick Doyle, Willie Stewart, Curlee Alexander, and Bob Shermer
The MMA News: We always ask for a final comment, first for the fans and then for your opponent.
Houston Alexander: For the Fans, MMA fans are the most well rounded type of fan because they understand MMA. To be a part of that is an honor, as a matter of fact its a privilage. MMA fans can see a real individual and I appreciate it. For Eric I don’t have much to say, from what I’ve seen he’s a real well rounded fighter, and I’m looking forward to him coming to Nebraska.
